Emma’s blog

To celebrate 2012’s leap year Alzheimer's Society, Alzheimer Scotland and Tesco are inviting you, your friends and family to take a giant leap for people with dementia.

Emma Austin who works at the Tesco Express in Eastbourne has taken on the challenge, and signed up to do a parachute jump for the very first time! Follow her progress below.

I did it and I’m so proud!

Tuesday 28 February 2012

Well I did it! I jumped out of a plane and it was absolutely amazing. Easily one of best experiences of my life. If you’re thinking about doing a skydive then I’d definitely recommend it – you should go for it!

I wasn’t too nervous when we set off in the plane, more excited than anything, and jealous of the people who were going in front of me! When it came to my turn to lean forward out of the doorway and let go it was so fantastic. We were free-falling through the clouds head-first which was amazing, before the parachute opened and everything went very quiet.

As soon as we hit the ground I wanted to get back on the plane and do it all over again!

Thanks so much to everyone who has been supporting me and who has sponsored me too, especially my Tesco workmates. Your generous donation will go to Alzheimer's Society, our charity of the year at Tesco which helps people live better with dementia.

I’m still hoping to raise a bit more money, so if you haven’t already, please sponsor me by clicking this link justgiving.com/Emma-Austin0

Thank you,

A few butterflies in my stomach!

Wednesday 22 February 2012

Hi everyone, well there’s less than one week to go until I do my parachute jump and I’m starting to get very excited, and a tiny bit nervous.

Someone told me the other day that 10,000 feet, which is the height that I’ll be jumping from, is equivalent to 31 Big Ben clock towers all stacked on top of one another. That’s pretty high – I really hope the parachute opens!

I’ve been chatting to a few of my friends who have done a skydive before, and they say it was the most amazing experience and they absolutely loved it. They told me to keep calm and to just enjoy every second. Now I can’t wait!

I’ll be travelling down to the Maidstone Airfield on Saturday (25 February) where the jump is taking place. Good luck to everyone who is jumping with me on the day, and don’t worry I’ll make sure I report back on what it was like. Wish me luck!

My family has generations of dementia

Tuesday 14 February 2012

Hi guys, this week I’ve mainly been working lots at the Tesco Express in Eastbourne where I am a team leader. I’ve worked at Tesco for over four years now and have made lots of great friends and really enjoy it.

Every year Tesco chooses a charity to support and this year it’s Alzheimer's Society and Alzheimer Scotland. I was extremely pleased when I heard they had chosen these charities because they help people with dementia and their carers all across the UK.

My Grandma had dementia and we’ve had dementia in my family for many generations, so I think it is very important that Tesco are raising lots of money to help people live well with the condition.

I want my skydive challenge to raise as much money as possible for this very worthy cause. Please sponsor me on my website here justgiving.com/Emma-Austin0

Come back next week to read more about my parachute jump!

Take a leap this leap year

Monday 6 February 2012

Hi everyone, it’s February already and this month we all have an extra day because it’s a Leap Year. If I had an extra day given to me out of the blue I’d probably do something really fun like go to a music festival, or I’d go shopping all day with my friends.

But maybe we should use the extra day to do something really worthwhile and rewarding for ourselves and for charity, like taking on an amazing challenge, such as a parachute jump and raising lots of money for incredible charities like Alzheimer's Society.

I’m really glad I decided to take on this challenge as it’s kept me motivated during these long boring winter months, when there’s nothing to do. It’s great to know I’ve got something fun to look forward to.

I’m getting excited now, just four weeks to go!

Come back next week to read more about my leap year challenge.

Busy fundraising this week!

Monday 30 January 2012

Hi all, I still can’t quite believe that I’ve signed up to do a skydive next month. I’m going to be doing a tandem jump which means I’ll be strapped to someone else who will pull the cord and release the parachute, so I know I’m in very safe hands.

Since last week I’ve been busy asking my friends and family to sponsor me. To celebrate pay day I went out for a lovely curry with all my Tesco colleagues and asked them to sponsor me too! I’ve raised £220 so far, so thank you to everyone who has supported me so far I’m really grateful.

All the funds I raise will go to Alzheimer's Society which is an amazing charity that gives support to people with dementia and their carers.

I’m still quite far away from my fundraising target of £500 though, so I wondered if I should hold a fundraising event at work to help boost funds. Perhaps I should hold a cake sale or have a fancy dress day? What do you think would raise more money for charity? Post a comment on the Tesco Facebook page with your ideas.

I’m getting excited now. Not long to go!

Come back next week to read more about why raising money for Alzheimer's Society is so important to me.

My giant leap for charity!

Monday 23 January 2012

Hi my name’s Emma Austin and I work at the Tesco Express in Eastbourne which I love. I’m doing a parachute jump next month in aid of Alzheimer's Society and it’ll be the first time I’ve ever done anything like this. I’ve never bungee jumped or even done an abseil before, but when I spotted the skydive poster in our work canteen I thought I’ve got to do that!

Jumping out of an aeroplane at 10,000 feet is pretty scary so I’m hoping lots of people will sponsor me to take on this once in a lifetime challenge. At the moment Alzheimer's Society is Tesco Charity of the Year and it’s a really worthwhile cause helping people with dementia and their carers. I’m hoping to raise over £500 for the charity, so dig deep and sponsor me if you can. Visit my online fundraising page justgiving.com/Emma-Austin0

I’ve tried to persuade a few of my work friends to do the jump with me but they all think I’m mad. I think you only live once so why not? At the moment I’m really looking forward to it, but I know as the day gets closer I’ll probably want to back out. I’m hoping I’ll be brave and go through with it. Six weeks to go.

Come back next week to see how I’m getting on with my fundraising target.
